Honda to launch fuel-efficient sporty hybrid car
Japanese automaker Honda says its new sporty hybrid car, the CR-Z, will hit showrooms on Friday.
Equipped with an electric motor and a 1.5-liter engine, the CR-Z manages 25 kilometers per liter of gasoline, making it more fuel efficient than Honda’s mini vehicles.
The starting price in Japan for the low-ceiling, 2-door hatchback is 2.26 million yen, or about 25,000 dollars, and Honda expects annual domestic sales of 12,000 units.
Honda President Takanobu Ito told reporters on Thursday that the new model is not only fun to drive but also fuel efficient. He said his company will prioritize promoting hybrid vehicles to tackle global environmental problems.
The CR-Z is due to reach North American and European markets later this year.
Thanks to tax breaks for green vehicles, hybrid cars accounted for nearly 12 percent of new vehicles, excluding mini vehicles, sold in Japan last year.
Competition in the hybrid vehicle market is expected to further intensify. Later this year, Honda plans to launch compact hybrid cars, while another carmaker, Nissan, says it will put luxury hybrid cars on sale.

Shai Agassis company, Better Place, is not just promoting electric cars but designing an entire system to service them, with battery charging stations. Many countries are expressing great interest.
