Or what’s your plan for reducing greenhouse gases?

Yes. We need higher gasoline taxes and also cap and trade.

Remember: gas taxes are preferable because they reduce negative externalities such as traffic congestion and also encourage the development of alternative fuels. The cost to consumers can be offset with tax credits.

Using NO2 as an example, explain how a resonance hybrid is consistent with the actual bond lenght, bond strength, and bond order.

Thanks to all in advance, much appreciated !!

Ok when you’ve got 2 or more lewis structures that have the same arrangement of atoms but different arrangements of electrons, you have resonance structures because you need resonance hybrids to adequately depict the bonding in the molecule. For example, with
NO2 you have 3 resonance structure.

First one, put O with 6 electrons, then bond the O to N. Put 1 unbonded electron on N. Now put a double bond on N and connect it to another O. On that O put 2 lone pairs of electrons.

Second structure:

Put 5 electrons on O and bond it to N. On N put a lone pair of electrons . Then double bond N to another O. And on that O put 2 lone pairs of electrons.

Third structure:

Put 2 lone pairs of electrons on O then double bond O to N.
Then on N put a lone pair of electrons. Now bond N to another O. And that O put 5 electrons.

Now between each structure put a double headed arrow.

A double bond between atoms is shorter than a single bond between the same atoms. But experiments have proved that both N and O bonds are the same length and are identical in all properties. Because it is not possible to write a lewis structure for NO2 in which both bonds are equivalent, we go for the concept of resonance. What Im saying here in a nutshell is if 2 or more lewis structures with the same arrangement of atoms can be written for a molecule or ion, , the real distribution of electrons is an average of what you see in the lewis structures. The individual lewis structures are called resonance forms. And the actual electronic structure of the molecule is called resonance hybrid of the resonance forms. In short because the electron distribution in NO2 is an average of those 3 resonance forms, the distribution of electrons in the bond of N and O may be seen to be greater than that of an ordinary single bond but less than that in an ordinary double bond. As a result the bond length will be shorter than an ordinary single bond but longer than an ordinary double bond.

A song I wrote in ‘07 about working to create positive change, and starting with yourself.

Thanks for listening.

lyrics:

It’s just more of the same changes
Headphones can only take me so far away
This is the point where I reassess my arrangements
It’s time to revert to what needs to be saved

Cause I’ve spent too long with my shoes on
Let myself start to play it safe
And my reactions became the factions of a misdirected race

Speaking of race, I’m compelled to run
Off the charts of what’s expected
Once again, I will channel the sun
Thinking hybrid; redirected

To finding melodies in the white noise
Secret passageways and doors
Trace the trails of forgotten flying creatures
I will never, never again ignore

Speaking of creatures, I’m compelled to fly
Off the charts of what’s expected
Once again, I will channel the sky
Thinking hybrid; redirected

A dive into the rain is an awakening; a sudden gust of wind
So as the storm brings forth the green progression
I too, will grow again

I am aware, awake, and able
I am digging in living land
Balanced, yet affected
Perpetual I climb
Above all, I am connected

Thinking hybrid; redirected

Pros and Cons when owning a hybrid car. Is it worth buying one?

Assuming you can afford the added expense of buying one, your gas expense will be less and you may help the environment (until you have to dispose of the ton of lead acid batteries!)

Make sure you get a good warranty and trade it off before it needs new batteries. (It can cost $5,000 to replace them!)

The flex fuel alternative may be less expensive. Lots of new cars can burn it–and regular unleaded gas. Burn E85 if it is available in your area. I live in the middle of corn central–we have lots of it!
