Premier John Brumby today welcomed Australia’s first commercially viable, fully electric vehicles to the state, which will be a part of a groundbreaking Victorian Government trial.
Mr Brumby was joined by Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas and Mitsubishi Motors Australia President Masahiko Takahashi in Port Melbourne today as 20 Mitsubishi i-MiEV were unloaded at Webb Dock East.
“The plug-in Mitsubishi i-MiEV will play a part in the Government’s groundbreaking $5 million electric vehicle trial, due to commence later this year,” Mr Brumby said.
“We are committed to making this state an electric vehicle friendly location and we understand how important cleaner, greener and innovative travel options are to Victorians.
“That’s why the Victorian Government is currently working with the RACV to find around 180 households interested in taking part in an electric vehicle trial. The successful applicants will get an electric car for three months and we look forward to Mitsubishi being part of that trial.
“This world-leading trial will create real conditions by testing how drivers, vehicles, plug-in charging infrastructure and the electricity network will interact in real-life situations.”
Mr Brumby said the five-year electric vehicle trial was part of the Government’s $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan and would help to find new ways of making electric cars more efficient and practical for Victorian families and roads.

Portland General Electric and NEC Corporation were joined by Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski, to open the nation’s first publicly available, quick-charge station at PGE headquarters in Portland, Oregon, during a two-day Nissan LEAF test-drive event. The quick-charge station, a collaboration of PGE and NEC, will fully charge an electric vehicle in 20-30 minutes.

ERRINGTON – Canadians could be finally making the switch to electrics.
High gas prices and concern for the environment are fueling the market for zero emission cars and an Oceanside company is cashing in.
Canadian Electric Vehicles of Errington sells electric conversion kits and utility vehicles – all over the world, but they’ve noticed a huge increase in Canadian sales.
The electric conversion kits – sold to those who want to convert their gas guzzlers to clean, zero emission electric vehicles are priced between 4 and 15 thousand dollars.
3 years ago, 80 percent of sales of CEV conversion kits were to the U.S. and abroad.
Now CEV President, Randy Holmquist says 70 percent of his sales are to Canadians.
Recent improvements of battery and drive system technology means converted cars can now get over 150 kilometres with one charge – well over the daily commute needs of most Canadians.
Holmquist recommends that customers are mechanically inclined before they take on the project of converting their cars to zero emission.
But he says more and more Canadians are choosing this method as an affordable alternative to gas or even hybrid vehicles.
