It isn’t really a complicated process to do an electric car conversion, but you will need to obtain certain specialized parts.

You will need: an electric motor, deep cycle batteries, a controller, a battery charger, an adaptor kit, and various other small parts.

But first, you are going to need a vehicle that you can do your electric car conversion with. Any vehicle can be used for this project, but some work better than others.

Heading the list are small cars and trucks, as they are light and strong. Your first consideration as shown in the detailed plans is to find the lightest vehicle that will still do the job of hauling you and whatever cargo you carry around.

Next, you will want a large DC motor that will produce power for your electric car. The larger the motor, the more power your electric car will have.

Don’t worry that it will be slow either. Many people have the wrong impression of electric cars; they accelerate as fast as any vehicle on the road and travel at least 50 mph.

What about batteries?

You will need to locate about 16-20 deep cycle batteries for your car as well. The plans outline sources of batteries, even free batteries that you can find with a little effort. The same source will probably have free DC motors too.

It’s just a matter of asking.

Why do you need this many batteries? In order to achieve a range of up to 100 miles on a single charge.

A controller is needed to fix the amount of current flowing from the batteries to the motor which determines how fast you go. The controller is connected to your old gas pedal linkage for smooth control of the vehicle.

In order to charge your batteries between trips, you will need an on-board battery charger. That way you can just plug it into any common AC circuit and get charged up again.

Doesn’t this sound like fun?

Isn’t it time you got started on your own conversion project?

As popularity and sales of hybrid vehicles increase each year they become less novelty and more reality. Where they can be serviced and who can service them are becoming important questions and following the manufacturer’s recommendations is important. The voltage run from these vehicles can not only hurt you, it could kill you.

Hybrids have two sources of power that run the vehicle, a conventional gas engine and an electric motor connected to a powerful battery. Many technicians are not trained to work on the electric motor and batteries in hybrids, so taking your hybrid in for service at the place you bought it is a safe bet. But it can also be limiting, especially if you move away or have a breakdown. When looking for an alternative to your dealer, the key is to ask your local shop if they have a technician who’s been trained to do maintenance on hybrids. Asking the right questions will not only protect your investment but also maintain the condition of the vehicle.

The engine that runs today’s cars and trucks, an internal combustion engine, has more or less stayed the same since it was first invented over a hundred years ago. For decades, engineers have tried to improve the engine, without significantly increasing costs.

The homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI engine does just this. It runs more efficiently and also creates less toxic emissions. It does so by burning the fuel with a flameless combustion, and it’s not triggered by a spark plug like the internal combustion engines are.

This is even important for hybrid vehicles, as most of them have an internal combustion engine and many of them are gasoline powered. By swapping out the existing engine with an HCCI one, it can improve fuel efficiency by more than fifteen percent. It will also help reduce dependence on foreign sources of oil. Auto manufactures say they hope to have a production model ready in the near future.

Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid Super Race Car First Look Geneva Motor Show 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid to Celebrate World Debut in Geneva Porsche AG will unveil the 911 GT3 R hybrid on March 4th in Geneva, exactly 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first car with hybrid drive, the Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus. This will open a new chapter in the history of Porsche with more than 20,000 wins in 45 years scored by the extremely successful Porsche 911 in racing trim. The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. The car features electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.
